The town of Dalaman and the Dalaman Airport occupy one of the few plains in this part of the south coast of Turkey.
The Dalaman International Airport (DLM) is situated about 6 kilometers south of the Dalaman city center and is the nearest airport for destinations such as Fethiye, Göcek, Marmaris, Köyceğiz, Dalyan, Sarigerme, Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü, Kaş and others in the area. Daily flights connect with Istanbul, while direct flights - both scheduled and charter going to and from major European cities occur several times weekly.
At present there are two passenger terminals, one for international flights and one for domestic, which handle a total of 2.5 million passengers each year. The terminals are 200 meters apart and are connected by walkways. When the new much larger international terminal was built the old one was employed to serve domestic flights. This will presumably reduce the often-lengthy time presently spent waiting in queues.
Dalaman Airport is one of the busiest airports in the Western Mediterranean/Southern Aegean regions of Turkey. Airport transfer to your destination can be accomodated by taxi or hotel shuttles. The highway D400, the major road along the Mediterranean coast, passes by the town centre about one kilometer to east and connects it with destinations southwards towards Fethiye and northwards in the direction of Marmaris and Dalyan.
The new international terminal at Dalaman Airport has a full range of facilities including fast food outlets, duty free, bars and cafés, as well as a 24hr medical centre and two banks - Vakıfbank and Denizbank. The airport also has the world's first duty-free outlet store in the departure lounge.
The new Dalaman International Airport Terminal cost approximately $150,000,000 to complete and is the third largest terminal building in Turkey. There are twelve boarding gates - eight with covered airbridges. The apron was also re-designed, increasing space for remote stands. Consequently, the airport has capacity to handle up to 35 flights at any one time. In total, the terminal now has a floor space of 95,000m2, compared with less than 45,000m2 prior to refurbishment.
Check-in and departures are in the upper two levels, with arrivals using the lower two levels. Parking facilities are available for up to 550 vehicles outside the terminal building. The old Terminal is still in use and being operated as the domestic terminal. There are daily flights to Ankara, and both of the Istanbul Airports.
Even with the popularity of this area - once a fishing, agriculture and forestry center, the natural beauty in Dalaman is unspoiled and well-preserved by the locals and Turkish government authorities. Dalaman is rapidly turning into a preferred destination rather than just a stop over on the way to another resort town. Its new roads and streets and the constant development of the area including the recent investment in the Airport are making it more accessible and more attractive.
